You are having a baby! Now what?

I’ll never forget when I first started making my baby registry. I had NO idea what to put on it. “Babies need clothes and bottles and pacifiers, right?” Suddenly I didn’t even know what I would need or use for my baby. It was SO overwhelming. I started looking up checklists online to make sure I was getting everything I needed. Not only did I end up requesting things that I did not need at all (unknowingly at the time), but there was still so much I ended up needing to purchase after the fact that I wish I had put on my registry. That’s why I created this list of the top 10 things you NEED for your registry! I guarantee you will use and love all of these items!

1. Burp Cloths

In my opinion, this is one of the most important things to put on your baby registry. After my baby shower, when I went through the things I was gifted for my baby, I remember telling my mom that I had received so many burp cloths, more than I knew what to do with. I thought ” I will never use all of these.” Boy, was I wrong. For the first 3-5 months of my child’s life, I had roughly 2 of those things at every corner of our home. Between the spit up, drool, leaky breasts, and postpartum tears…trust me. You’ll need them.

2. Diaper Genie

Ok, I’ll admit, I was among the few people that thought a Diaper Genie was such a frivolous baby purchase. This was something I did not actually have on my registry, but purchased soon after my baby was born. He is 9 months old, and we still use it!

If you have never heard of a Diaper Genie, it’s a diaper disposal system that seals diapers individually to block out odors. it looks like a normal trash can, but has an air tight seal at the top. It’s a rather Bougie-sounding product, but it sure beats dumping stinky diapers in the kitchen trash can.

3. Baby Bath

Having a baby bath was amazing when my son was a newborn. We received the bath seat we had on our registry and it worked great! What I loved about it was that it had holes in it for the water to pass through, so that you could just set it in the bath tub and fill it however high you wanted. It is the perfect size for a newborn baby and we loved it!

4. Electric Nasal Aspirator

Again, something that I didn’t put on my registry but wish I did! Having a baby nasal aspirator was lifesaving! I can’t tell you how many times my son’s nose was jam full of boogies, and this thing really gets them out.

Most times, the hospital will send you home with one of those blue rubber snot suckers. I tried that for like….a day. It does not get the snot out nearly as well as an electric one. It’s also a lot more comfortable in the nose (yes, I tried it lol).  Do your baby and yourself a favor, just buy the electric one!

5. Thermometer

Baby getting sick is high on the list of new mom fears. Unfortunately, it is inevitable at some point or another. Having a good thermometer on hand is really helpful to monitor your baby’s fever, should he/she have one. I’m no doctor, so having this on hand is a must for me.

6. Bottle Warmer

If you are planning to bottle feed your baby at all, a bottle warmer is a must have! Most bottle warmers use steam or hot water to warm up bottles of breast milk or formula. My baby was breast fed during my maternity leave, and once I went back to work, he was very particular about the temperature of his bottles. What I love about bottle warmers for breast milk, is that you don’t have to worry about hot spots like you do when using a heating medium like a microwave. It’s also thought to be a lot safer and healthier!

7. Sleeping Sack or Swaddle

There is no way to tell what kind of sleep sack or swaddle your baby will prefer, but I recommend some with Velcro, like the Halo swaddles or the Dreamland baby (this one is a bit more expensive but it is SO good). My baby could break out of regular swaddles the day he was born, so we had to use something a little more snug. Whatever you choose, it’s a good idea to add at least one type of swaddle to your registry!

8. Sound Machine

A sound machine for sleeping is one thing I would not skip on the baby registry! I know. Sound? Yes! Babies get used to the loud sounds in utero and loud white noise is actually comforting to them! It also helps babies not be woken up by other sounds around them. When our baby was really young, we used the Baby Shusher. It was a life saver!

9. Wipe Warmer

Now, I know this probably seems like it belongs on the list of things people get for their babies that they don’t need, but I’m here to tell you…you won’t regret it! A wipe warmer is kind of a luxury for a baby.  But I mean, cold wipes are rude. It makes the middle of the night diaper changes so much more peaceful and calmer. Anything you can do to get back to sleep more quickly, right? Besides, if it’s a gift someone else is getting for you, you might as well!

10. Double Zip sleepers

Normally, I wouldn’t add much clothing to your registry, because people will buy it for you anyway. However, THIS specific piece of clothing is a MUST. Double zip sleeping pjs are where it’s at for the newborn stage. They allow you to zip from the bottom up during middle of the night diaper changes so that you don’t have to take the whole pajama off in order to change a diaper. It not only keeps the baby from getting too awake at night, but it is also a breeze for you! No buttons! Get the zip ups! 🙂

  1. It is a great list for a new baby registry. I had many unnecessary items on my registry list for my first kid, but I wish I had bought a sound machine earlier.
